Fancy a break from the national curriculum! Book a themed workshop from MantissaOpera which can stand alone or be developed into a day or week of fun!
MantissaOpera’s work has been highly praised by all participating schools including Ofsted Inspectors who have been present.
MantissaOpera Pirate Workshop
Using Pirates of Penzance (very loosely) as a basis we take 40 children (1 class or 10 from each year group) and work for 2 hours preparing a show for the rest of the school involving singing, acting, movement, dance and a sword fight!
The whole school as audience are involved in the final product for the last hour.
Worksheets are provided for all children in the school according to ability.
Participants (or whole school) can dress up (we do!) as Pirates with just a scarf or the whole works!
Total time 3 hours (9am-12am)
AIMS
• Introduce Opera, singing, and acting to children who have little access to the genre.
• Discuss issues raised by the workshop such as gender stereotyping (there were female pirates!) and choreographed fighting (is what we see on films reality?). In the sword fight the female Pirate beats the male which often leads to interesting debate!
• Discuss ‘good’ singing with whole school, singing partner songs with the pirates as they appear in the show. Introduce singing in a foreign language. Does it put them off? Can they understand what is going on when we demonstrate singing in Italian? Amongst others, they will hear examples of Mozart and Gilbert and Sullivan.
The followind schools are taking part:
1. All Saints CEP school
2. All Hallows Primary
3. Cuxton Community Junior School
4. Glencoe Junior School Chatham
5. Elaine Primary School
