I met a new client last week. What was interesting, is what they had done to date. So far they had done a brilliant job. They had a great logo, great branding on their box, had a great looking website, had the idea trademarked, had the business cards, sourced all the products from China.....
So far they had done an excellent job and spent approx £ 10,000
But they had no sales.....
Why was that - I hear you ask........
They had been so focussed on getting all the product stuff done, that they did not have any budget for the marketing of the product. When i searched on Google for various search terms, all drew a blank, so effectively their website was invisible......
They had not utilised You Tube or other free places to try and get some free website traffic.
He had tried to get the product into retail stores. However it is a very long journey to get your products onto the shelves, can often take around a year, and the margins that they want are massive.....
So the moral in this story, is that yes it is important to get the image / branding of the product right. But it is also crucial that you have a budget for the marketing of the goods, and have the resources to live whilst trying to get things started.
He now has approx 700 of them sitting in his garage gathering dust.....
So he has gone back to a day job to make ends meet.....
